There is an appealing background to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just across the border from nearby Thailand, where gambling den wagering is illegal. Eight gambling dens are established in a relatively small space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime location, a three to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing capital accrued from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few limitations constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; however, funding sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 17:00, and though visas are for all intents and purposes required to cross, there are ways around this, as is correct of most border crossings.
The initial Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship casino, contains one hundred and fifty slot machine games and sixty table games. The Naga gambling den is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of blackjack, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are 150 one armed bandits and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slot machines and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around resort and hotel complex that contains a number of comforts on top of the casino, which has ten thousand square feet of 130 slots and 88 table games.
